Fancy Color Diamond Certification

A laboratory report gives extraordinary color a verifiable scientific identity. Its most important conclusion is not only what the color is, but whether nature created it.

A rare color can be natural, produced by treatment or grown in a laboratory. These possibilities may look remarkably similar to the unaided eye, yet they belong to entirely different categories of rarity and value.

For an important fancy color diamond, visual inspection and a seller’s description are not sufficient. Independent laboratory analysis must answer three separate questions.

Is It Diamond?

The material must first be identified as diamond rather than an imitation or another gemstone.

Is It Natural?

The laboratory distinguishes a diamond formed in nature from one grown by technological processes.

Is the Color Natural?

A natural diamond can still have treated color. Natural diamond origin and natural color origin must both be confirmed.

The essential distinction

“Natural diamond” describes how the crystal formed. “Natural color” describes how its visible color developed. One conclusion does not automatically prove the other.

Precise terminology

Report or Certificate?

The jewelry trade frequently uses the word certificate, but an independent gemological laboratory issues a grading or identification report. It records the laboratory’s conclusions about the diamond examined at a specific time.

What the report is

It documents identity, measurements, weight, color origin, color grade and other characteristics according to the selected service.

What the report is not

A Valuation or Guarantee

It does not set a selling price, guarantee future value, establish legal ownership or replace an expert evaluation of beauty and condition.

The appropriate report depends on whether the diamond is loose or mounted, the depth of grading required and whether its rough was analyzed before polishing.

Colored Diamond Grading Report

A full quality assessment with color grade, color origin, carat weight, clarity grade and plotted clarity diagram. Designed for loose natural colored diamonds weighing 0.15 carats or more.

Mounted versus loose

A mounted diamond can be identified and its color origin examined, but a complete grading report requires the diamond to be loose so weight, clarity and other characteristics can be assessed accurately.

Two meanings of origin

Color Origin Is Not Geographic Origin

The word origin appears in both contexts, but the conclusions answer completely different questions.

Color Origin

States whether the diamond’s color is natural or the result of treatment. In complex cases, the conclusion may be undetermined. This is fundamental to classification as a natural fancy color diamond.

Geographic Origin

Connects an eligible polished diamond to a country or region of recovery through analysis performed while it was still rough. It is a separate service and cannot normally be reconstructed from the polished diamond alone.

Beyond visual inspection

How a Laboratory Examines Color

Fancy color origin is established by combining trained observation with advanced instrumentation. The laboratory studies the diamond’s optical behavior and the atomic defects that absorb or emit light.

A Gemological Fingerprint

Microscopy, absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence imaging and photoluminescence can reveal growth structures, trace elements, lattice defects and treatment related features.

No single visible characteristic proves every case. The final conclusion is based on the complete body of evidence and comparison with extensive reference data.

Why treatments require expert testing

Irradiation, heating and high pressure high temperature processes can alter a natural diamond’s color. Some results closely resemble colors created during geological formation.

The decisive report field

Three Possible Color Origin Conclusions

Confirmed

Natural

The observed color is consistent with natural geological formation and no evidence requiring a treated conclusion was found.

Disclosed

Treated

The diamond itself may be natural, but its color has been altered or produced by a process performed after mining.

Unresolved

Undetermined

The available evidence does not allow the laboratory to distinguish natural color from treatment with sufficient confidence.

Undetermined is not confirmed natural

This conclusion is especially relevant to certain radiation related green and blue diamonds. An undetermined stone should not be represented as having laboratory confirmed natural color.

How to Verify a Report

A genuine report must correspond to the diamond being offered. Checking the document alone is only the beginning.

  1. Search the number

    Enter the report number and carat weight in the issuing laboratory’s official online database.

  2. Compare every field

    Match shape, measurements, weight, color, clarity and comments with the archived record.

  3. Match the diamond

    Use the clarity plot, measurements and any verified laser inscription to connect the document to the physical stone.

  4. Consider reexamination

    For a valuable diamond with an older report or uncertain history, an independent update or verification can reveal later damage, recutting or alteration.

What Certification Cannot Tell You

Two diamonds can share the same laboratory description and still differ visibly. A report establishes facts, but connoisseurship begins where standardized fields end.

Market Value

A grading report is not an appraisal and does not state a buying or selling price.

Visual Beauty

Brightness, personality, color balance and movement must be judged from the diamond itself.

Legal Ownership

The report does not establish title, chain of ownership or the seller’s authority to transfer the diamond.

Future Performance

It cannot guarantee appreciation, liquidity, demand or the price achievable in a future sale.

Jewelry Craftsmanship

A loose diamond report does not evaluate the quality, security or design of a later setting.

Current Condition Forever

The findings describe the stone at examination. Damage, polishing or treatment performed later may change it.
