Natural Pink Diamonds
From delicate blush to vivid rose, natural pink diamonds combine an elusive geological origin with exceptional rarity.
Natural pink diamonds are defined by a pink hue that developed within the crystal through natural geological processes. Their color may appear soft and pastel, richly saturated or modified by purple, orange or brown.
Unlike yellow and blue diamonds, pink diamonds are not generally colored by a trace element. Current gemological research associates most natural pink color with changes in the diamond’s crystal lattice.
Plastic Deformation
Immense geological stress can squeeze and subtly distort the diamond crystal in a process called plastic deformation. This structural change affects how the diamond absorbs and transmits light, producing the visible pink color.
Some pink diamonds display delicate internal bands or lines related to deformation. This color graining forms part of the stone’s natural structure and may influence both its color distribution and clarity assessment.
Why Are Pink Diamonds So Rare?
Creating pink color requires an unusual balance of pressure, temperature and structural change. Most natural pink diamonds are small, lightly colored or included. Stones that combine strong saturation, notable size, transparency and even color are exceptionally scarce.
Australia
The Argyle mine was the most important modern source of pink diamonds before its closure in 2020. Its production included distinctive pink, purplish pink and red stones.
India
Historic Golconda deposits produced several celebrated pale and saturated pink diamonds associated with royal collections.
Africa
Notable pink diamonds have been recovered in Tanzania, South Africa, Angola and Botswana.
Other sources
Pink diamonds have also been found in Brazil and Russia, although significant gem quality discoveries remain uncommon.
Understanding Pink Diamond Grades
GIA evaluates pink diamonds through hue, tone and saturation. Unlike yellow diamonds, a visible pink hue can receive a colored diamond description even at very light levels.

Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid pink diamonds display especially strong saturation and are extraordinarily rare. Fancy Deep combines strong color with a deeper tone. It should not be understood as simply a stronger grade than Fancy Vivid.
When saturation is exceptionally strong and the tone is sufficiently deep, a diamond may be classified as Fancy Red rather than pink. Natural red diamonds form an even rarer color category.
Pure Pink and Modifying Hues
The final color named in a laboratory description is the dominant hue. Modifiers can alter both the character and rarity of a pink diamond.
Pink
An unmodified pink grade. Strong, evenly distributed pure pink color is highly sought after.
Purplish Pink
Pink remains dominant, while a purple modifier creates a cooler rose or magenta character. Purple-Pink indicates a stronger purple contribution.
Orangy Pink
Pink remains dominant, while orange adds warmth and can produce coral or salmon tones.
Brownish Pink
A brown modifier gives pink a more muted, earthy appearance. Its appeal depends on the complete visual balance of the stone.
How Cut and Setting Influence Pink
A pink diamond is cut to protect weight, improve color distribution and reveal the strongest possible face up color without sacrificing life and proportion.
Radiant and cushion
Mixed faceting can concentrate pink and create a richer face up appearance.
Oval and pear
Elongated shapes can combine color concentration with a refined outline and strong visual presence.
Round brilliant
Its faceting emphasizes white light return and may reveal less apparent color than certain fancy shapes.
Setting and contrast
Warm gold can reinforce pale pink tones, while white diamonds and cool white metal can create contrast around stronger colors.
The setting may influence how color is perceived in a finished jewel, but it does not alter the laboratory color grade assigned to the loose diamond.
What Determines Rarity and Value?
- Color
Hue, tone and saturation carry the greatest influence. Strong, attractive and evenly distributed pink is especially rare.
- Modifier
Pure pink and desirable purple modifiers can be highly sought after, but every stone must be judged by its complete appearance.
- Distribution
Even face up color is generally preferred to distracting pale zones, dark areas or obvious bands.
- Carat weight
Size has an exceptional effect because most natural pink diamonds are small. Large saturated stones are extraordinarily scarce.
- Cut
A successful cut balances color concentration, brightness, shape and weight retention from the rough.
- Clarity
Color is dominant, but transparency, visible graining and inclusions affecting durability remain important.
How to Select a Pink Diamond
The report defines the grade. The eye determines whether the individual diamond possesses life, balance and character.
Compare stones under the same lighting conditions.
Look for color that remains visible across the face.
Evaluate brightness as well as saturation.
Study the modifier in daylight and warm light.
Check graining and inclusions for transparency.
Confirm natural color origin independently.
Confirming Natural Pink Color
Pink color may occur naturally, be created in a laboratory or result from treatment of a natural diamond. These possibilities cannot be separated reliably by appearance alone.
A GIA Natural Colored Diamond Report identifies whether the diamond is natural and whether its color is natural or treated. Depending on the service, it can also include the complete color grade, clarity, carat weight and identifying characteristics.
